Pigeon Mountain, the Volcano and Reserve
 
Pigeon Mountain, situated in Halfmoon Bay, east of Auckland City was once called Ohuia Rangi - a 'castle & moat' volcano which overlooks the Tamaki Estuary.  It was originally three times its present size but its two craters had been quarried away to provide scoria.  This area was occupied by the Ngai Tai people and the first Europeans to settle in this area were the fencibles from Howick.

The view towards Pakuranga.  Pakuranga used to be a rich farming
district with much of the produce being consumed by residents of nearby Howick. 
Most of Pakuranga was still farmland only 50 or 60 years ago.
Pakuranga was originally known as "Pakuranga rahihi" - battle of the sun's rays

A Pukeko, also called a Purple Gallinule, or Purple Swamp Hen. 
And a quick recipe for the chefs out there ......
Boil a large pot of water, add the Pukeko and a medium sized rock;
boil for several hours;  Remove from heat,
Remove the Pukeko and eat the rock
